In Honiara, I saw the mighty hand of God. 35,000 souls in the Solomon Islands' national soccer stadium is a sight never seen before. They sat without movement or sound, listening and watching intently. We're not talking about a church convention for the saints, but a Gospel meeting for poor, lost sinners. They came by foot, in buses and cars, and on the backs of trucks. They came respectfully, with a passion to hear the Message of Christ.
Pastor John Carter preaching in the rain.
They stayed, even when it rained. Before I spoke on the power of evil spirits, I had a premonition to warn my team to prepare for an attack by the enemy, Satan. As soon as I walked on the stage and announced the topic, "The Evil World of the Occult," the prince of the power of the air sent a powerful wind gust followed by driving rain. I then determined in my heart that the raging elements would not drive me from the battlefield. I called out to God for deliverance and preached the Word in the authority of the Holy Spirit. I appealed to the audience of seekers to stay with me and not abandon the field to the Enemy. Perhaps 50 timid ones ran for shelter. As I preached with the rain running down my neck and drenching my suit, I felt the mantle of the Lord's mighty power. The wind ceased and the rain eased, soon to stop altogether. I finished the meeting with an appeal for all to forsake the "works of darkness" and accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. 10,000 souls responded and crowded down the front to publicly confess Christ. The meeting was a mighty victory for God.
One night I experienced a strange happening. I was conscious we were in the midst of a great battle between Christ and Satan, but nothing could prepare me for the plain sensation of a hand placed on my left shoulder as I preached His Message. I spun around, expecting to see a team member, but the stage was empty. No human being was there. Was the hand a reminder that One greater than earthly or demonic foes was with me?
To God be the Glory, great things HE has done.
As the meetings progressed, so the crowds increased. Soon we had 30,000 and then 35,000. Maybe more. The people were a sea of faces as far as I could see. Those who could find no resting place within the soccer field listened on the hill outside the fence. They stood motionless, as though in the presence of a supernatural force. They were. God was there in the person of the blessed Holy Spirit.
524 blood redeemed souls were baptized by 29 pastors in a crocodile infested river.
The national soccer stadium was available for only 10 nights, but God did more in 10 nights than I had seen Him previously do in 10 months. The great truths were all preached, sometimes in double nightly sessions. On the second and final Sabbath, 524 blood redeemed souls were baptized by 29 pastors in a crocodile infested river. Not far from where we baptized, just last year a man who went to the aid of his wife was killed by one of these fearful monsters. Thousands and thousands watched this baptism, and the press heralded the story. How great is our God!
35,000 came to the final Sunday night meeting. The Prime Minister with his ministers was also present, and raised his hand in response to my appeal to follow Christ and His Truth. A new congregation was formed, and doubtless many of the 4,000 who indicated their desire to be baptized and follow Christ will become members of this new fellowship of saved believers.
Members of the new congregation.
Let no one tell you that the Gospel has lost any of its power. I testify to all that the Good News of a crucified, resurrected, and returning Redeemer is still the power of God unto salvation to all who believe.
It seems to this old warrior of the Cross that it is not the Gospel that has lost its power, but rather we poor members of the Church whose faith is often like a smoldering flax. We need to rekindle the fires that once bathed the Church with the authority of Heaven. As Moody remarked, "Less dinners, and get after sinners!"
The work in Honiara has just begun.
The work in Honiara has just begun. We need you, dear supporter, to let your faith rise to the occasion. We need to get our meetings on television over there, and the doors have opened for us to do so. We also need to arise and build a Gospel radio station to sound forth the Message. It can and must be done. Now is the time.
Please, please, let us move now. Please help me raise $385,000.00 for the public proclamation of the Gospel of Christ, in the Solomons and right around the world.
We are in the midst of the greatest battle between Christ and Satan, between holy angels and evil demons, and we must now work "before the night comes." I testify to you: I have seen the mighty hand of God. I have felt the power of the Lord God of Heaven. I have seen the Holy Spirit at work in an extraordinary way. I stand in awe. What I saw, no poor sinner and stumbling preacher could do. I give glory to God!
