Greater than the power of the sun (Romans 1:16)
November 2011
Dear "Missionary,"
Kata Rangoso placed his hand on my head. I was a boy of six or seven. The place was the Queensland Camp Meeting in Australia. Pastor Rangoso (Ragoso) was visiting from the Solomon Islands. The few words he spoke instilled in me a desire to become a missionary. I will never forget his smile.
Rangoso came from the infamous Marovo Lagoon. When he was a boy, the British Government advised all would-be missionaries and traders to stay clear. The natives were steeped in Heathenism, devil worship, human sacrifice, and cannibalism. Rangoso's father was chief of chiefs, and nothing happened without his permission. After meeting missionary Captain Jones, he allowed a small school to be built. Rangoso was one of the first pupils. He became one of the first Christians on the island where people lived in fear of demons and each other. When he succeeded his father as chief of chiefs, God used him to lead 5,000 of his people to Christ.
During the Second World War, Pastor Rangoso helped save 200 allied airmen. In spite of his loyalty, he was cruelly beaten by an army officer because of his faith. His nose was broken, his back lacerated, and he was thrown into prison. The enraged officer tried to execute him but the order to fire died on his cursing lips. Rangoso escaped and spent the war years saving souls and saving lives. (The officer was later given a dishonorable discharge.)

When we visited his homeland a few weeks ago, we discovered he was still remembered and revered. On his tomb is an inscription that calls this son of devil worshippers and cannibals, "a prince among men." Such is the power of the Gospel (Rom. 1:16).
I believe Pastor Rangoso would have been pleased at what we saw and experienced. His great heart of love and courage would have thrilled at the vast crowds that packed the soccer stadium to hear the Gospel he so loved.
Big changes are taking place
Today this old warrior would be urging us to do more for Christ because the times demand it. The whole world is becoming the playground of evil spirits. The old gods are being brought back. New Age spirits and the gods of Paganism are supplanting Christ.
Big Changes are Taking Place
Within thirty or forty years, Europe will be Moslem, and America will be a Catholic country. Moslem couples have on average eight plus children, while Europeans have less than two. In England, more Moslems attend their mosques than Christians go to church. In the United States, Moslems are multiplying and mosques are springing up everywhere. A flood of immigrants, legal and illegal, are bringing with them ideas that are the antithesis of the Protestant faith that made America great. Today, not one Protestant sits on the Supreme Court.
What would Kata Rangoso tell us to do? More importantly, what would Jesus tell us to do?
- Evangelize! Preach the Gospel of Christ. Don’t listen to pessimists and naysayers.
- Evangelize NOW because the time will come when doors now open, will close.
I called you "missionary" because it means a person with a MISSION. You and I have a mission to proclaim the Gospel of Christ. The Waldenses said, "Ye shall be missionaries or ye shall be nothing."
Please join me in an aggressive outreach to help build the Kingdom of God, while we still can.
