Dear Partner,
Who doesn’t love a baby, especially when he’s part of your family? I have just returned from San Francisco where Beverley and I welcomed a 9lb 10oz baby boy, our grandson. Yes, that’s right, even an old evangelist knows a BIG baby when he sees one. He joins his 2-year-old sister, Amelie, who confidentially is the joy of our hearts. She is a tiny little blue-eyed girl with tiny hands which prompted Juli to say, “Dad, she may be little but she’s got you wrapped around her little finger.” Of course that statement is totally untrue as you can imagine.

A baby changes everything. Years ago in California, there was a mining settlement called “Roaring Camp,” so named because the inhabitants spent so much of their time roaring, cursing and drinking. Then the unexpected happened. A tiny newborn baby boy was thrust into their presence through the tragic death of his parents, the victims of a violent coach accident. The miners found themselves the adopted parents of the wee child whose very presence demanded radical changes. Dirty men washed and shaved and an atmosphere of peace came to dwell in the place of chaotic disorder. They called the carefully tended infant “the LUCK.” But there was no luck about these strange developments—it was the reaction of human hearts to the love that emanates from a small bundle of joy.
Jesus came 2,000 plus years ago. He came down from Glory through the womb of a young Jewish peasant girl. He was, despite appearances, the King of the Universe, His mother’s Creator and Savior. He was, quite simply, God in human flesh, on a mission to redeem a lost chaotic world. There was no luck about Him: He was the Lord of life, time, providence, order, destiny, judgment and eternity. He was totally unique. He was born to die, and His death was the one great event that gave meaning to His living. The Bible teaches he was not a mere social reformer, a mealy-mouthed preacher of ethics, but a sacrifice. He came to make satisfaction and atonement for our waywardness, selfishness, rebellion, pride and meanness. He was, and remains, the One hope our world has. Without Jesus, I am lost now and forever.
One doesn’t need to be a smart lawyer to recognize that humanity is in a mess. We need more than an example, we need a Savior.
As Christmas rolls around again, it would be good if we paused and asked ourselves these questions: Where am I going? What difference am I making? Is the world a better place because of me? Will I be missed when I say my last “good-byes?”
Beverley and I plan to make the drive to San Francisco again this Christmas. Life is short and there are more important things than things. Loving, caring, laughing, giving, singing, and sharing, are more and more important to us as we grow older. We want to hug our kids and our grandkids. This may help our family and friends understand a bit why we still carry on doing the work we do. The world, including America, is dying without Christ. As the 95-year-old Billy Graham said, “We are drowning in a sea of immorality.” The world needs to hear the Gospel of Christ who came with blood and tears one night in Bethlehem so long ago.

• I hope you will partner with us in reaching out for Christ to a world that desperately needs to hear the Good News of the love of God.

• I hope you’ll decide to do something significant for the redemption of lost souls. I hope you’ll write to me today. Remember one soul is worth more than all the gold in the Universe. That’s why we carry on.
