There was the pretty girl from Down Under who was not ashamed to publicly confess Christ. Australia was once a Christian country where everyone received his “Christian name.” But those days are past. The Humanists and Secularists have waged a relentless war against Christianity, while the Church has often been a whispering hope. Just a few years ago, 75% of Australians professed faith in Christ. Today that percentage is down to 49%. I was brought up in an Australia where almost everyone believed in Christ, but today the educators and television “know-it-alls” miss not an opportunity to denigrate the Faith of our Fathers. But apparently they didn’t get through to our lovely Nicola McDermott. Proudly wearing a golden cross around her neck, she paused for prayer before she attempted the High Jump. On her arm were the words, “FOR HIS GLORY.” She jumped higher than any Australian had ever jumped, and for a faltering moment it appeared that she had broken the Olympic record, but the bar trembled, hesitated, and then fell. She had missed out on gold, but won silver.
No one expected her response. On secular Australian television Nicola told of her faith in Jesus. She spoke about the Gospel. She spoke about her faith in public evangelism, mentioning the great American
soul winner, Billy Graham. Her
face shone, and her words carried
an irresistible force. I was proud
of her. I was proud of Jesus, the
Man who just won’t go away.
Why should He? He is alive and coming again.
